The Counterfeiters

Posted on March 24, 2008

If you haven't seen The Counterfeiters yet, rush out and see it while it’s still in the theaters. This film won the Academy Award for Foreign Film, and until I saw it I was sad that Persepolis didn't win. But having seen them both I agree with the Academy voters, although both are so deserving.

In German with English subtitles, this movie grabs you and never lets you go. It is a story of inmates in a German concentration camp who have been brought together to make counterfeit passports and money. The absolute horror of the camp comes through the experiences of these somewhat "protected” inmates who witness what is happening around them mostly through sounds outside their area.

The Counterfeiters
tells its true story of courage, despair, survival and human connectedness. It is also a beautiful film, peering into the human heart and will in a way most films barely attempt.
