When I was growing up, most girls my age were dreaming of the house in the suburbs with a husband, kids and a white picket fence. I was dreaming of a corner office and private jet with a business card that read CEO. Somehow, I ended up with all those things. Well, almost. The corner office is the southeast corner of my house and the business card is President/Co-Owner…my partner has claimed CEO.
The reality is slightly different than the vision was but I consider myself successful nonetheless. I think.
Daily life is not easy. The kids are 5 years and 15 months. The husband thinks I work too much. The job is a new company. The partner is work obsessed. Quite honestly, I am still trying to figure it all out. One thing I do know? I love being a mom and I love being an entrepreneur and I would not give one up for the other.
Some people tell me you cannot have a successful career and nurture your family at the same time. I refuse to believe that is true. I believe with the right support team in both areas you can indeed be successful in both areas. My children are not loved less, or neglected or undisciplined because I work. In fact, I believe I am giving them a solid foundation for some good values. They will always be first in my life, but there is something to be said for working hard and loving what you do professionally. I don’t consider what I do professionally “work”. I love what I do, I love my industry and I have a great business partner who knows my family is first.
So this is the journey of how we make it come together each week. The mom, who’s packing lunch and changing diapers. The Wife, who is discussing finances and paying bills and the entrepreneur who is making it happen in online marketing. The criticism is harsh, the pleasing everyone is impossible, but the satisfaction is priceless.
