Norah O'Donnell is the co-host of CBS This Morning. She lives in New York City with husband Geoff Tracy, a restaurateur and owner of Chef Geoff's, and kids Grace and Henry (twins), 6, and Riley, 5.
Describe your job and work schedule.
I'm a co-host on CBS This Morning with Charlie Rose and Gayle King. I usually start my day very early in the morning, between 3 a.m. and 3:30 a.m., when I first check my Blackberry or iPhone for emails from our show's team. I get updates throughout the night on every segment in the show, including correspondent scripts and our latest original reporting. I also get emailed the most relevant news stories from the New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal and other publications, and I check Twitter for additional headlines before making my way into the office.
By 5:30 a.m., it's time for hair and makeup. For the next 45 minutes I make my way through six different newspapers and get a briefing on the broadcast's segments and guests from a senior producer. At around 6:20 a.m., I'm on the set doing live cross talks with our affiliates around the country to preview highlights from the show.
After the broadcast ends at 9 a.m., I stick around for another hour to update the show for our west coast affiliates. I eat an early lunch at my desk, then take meetings, answer emails and make calls on developing stories. Most days I try to leave the office by 2 p.m. and pick my kids up from school at 2:45 p.m.
How do you handle child care?
At the office, women need to assemble a team to help them succeed. The same is true at home. I believe we've got to get beyond the notion, which seems ubiquitous, that professional women can't escape feeling guilty about how they handle child care at home. It's different for everyone. Some people have grandparents, some people use day care. I, myself, use babysitters.
What was your first real job?
I've worked since I was about 10 years old. In fact, my first job was actually on TV! My father, at the time a colonel in the army, was stationed in Seoul, South Korea. We lived on the base and my mom met someone who said a Korean TV station was looking for someone my age to co-host a 30-minute program to help students learn English. Luckily for me, there were no child labor laws, and I experienced the unique joy of earning my first paycheck!
What is your favorite thing your husband does to help lighten your load?
Geoff helps put together a color-coded babysitter calendar and recently synched our calendars on our iPhones so we can more effectively coordinate our kids' schedules—and our own. He also set up the app Wunderlist, so we can share a running grocery list. Technology really helps!
How do you and your husband fit marriage into the balance?
My husband is my best friend and we greatly value the time we can spend together. We really make an effort to go to dinner twice a week—alone.
When have you been most daring in your personal life?
The most daring thing I've done is have three kids in 13 months. My twins were born in the spring of 2007 and I was pregnant again four months later!
What do your children dream of being when they grow up?
Grace wants to be a rock star, Riley wants to be a "horse-rider," and Henry wants to be a soccer player.
What is your working mom mantra?
Don't sweat the small stuff. There's no way to be even close to perfect at work or at home.
If you could describe your life in one word, what would it be?
Nonstop.
