We can't think of a more relaxing treat for working moms than a trip to the spa. But if you're not sure what to do or what to wear or how things work, it can be less blissful, more stressful. Here, the experts at SpaFinder Wellness share tips on how to make the most out of your spa-going encounter.

Show up on time. If you're running late, you lose. Spas often can't push your appointment back more than 10 minutes, and you'll end up with a shorter treatment, or none at all. Need an incentive to arrive on time? Many spas have serene relaxation lounges, with some running the full gamut with heat (steam and sauna) and hydrotherapy facilities (hot tubs and fancy showers). These get you into a tranquil spa mindset before your service. Ideally, arrive 15 to 30 minutes early so you can enjoy an unhurried transition into the spa.

Know when to cancel. Short-notice cancellations will probably incur a charge, especially if you've left your credit card number at booking. Know the spa's cancellation policies when you book and give as much notice as possible if you change your appointment plans.

Mind your talk manners. Your cell phone should be turned offand kept offwhile in the spa; using it is a huge no-no. Better yet, leave it at home. In a relaxation room, conversation is fine as long as it's in a soft tone.

Think about gender. Having a male or female spa therapist is up to you. Spas make every effort to accommodate guest wishes in this regard. Keep in mind that at peak hours, it may be harder to fulfill your request, and that for less-requested treatments, the spa may have only one therapist available. Remember to book in advance; if you are a fan of a particular therapist, chances are someone else is as well.

Consider how much to take off. Nudity can cause a new spa goer the the most anxiety, as baring all to someone you've just met can feel awkward. But most therapists in the U.S. go to great lengths to maintain guest modesty, stepping out of the treatment room to allow you to disrobe and get comfortable under the sheet on the massage table. Still uncomfortable? It's perfectly okay to wear underwear while having a massage. And some spas supply disposable undergarments for select treatments.

Tip correctly. Leaving 15 to 20 percent is customary. Tips should be left at the reception desk, which will have gratuity envelopes and pass them along to the therapist (you may want to check with your spa prior to paying, as most permit cash tips only). Received services from more than one therapist? Leave a separate tip for each. At a medical spa, tip the facialist, not the medical doctor. Some spas include gratuity in the price, so check beforehand.

Mention medical conditions. Be sure to mention any health concerns or conditions when you book your appointment. Certain treatments may not be advisable for you. Also, tell the technician if you're wearing contact lenses before you have a facial.

Communicate your preferences. Be sure to speak up, as all aspects of treatment can be modified to your taste: amount of light, kind (or absence) of music, room temperature and whether or not you choose to have a conversation or enjoy the treatment in silence. If you want the therapist to give you a deep massage, or be gentler, let him or her know. And feel free to ask questions. Your therapist will enjoy knowing your thoughts and clarifying any issues you may have. If any part of your experience is unsatisfactory or uncomfortable, first tell the therapist. If the response isn't helpful, speak to a manager or the owner of the spa, if available.

Eat and drink right. Try not to eat for at least an hour before a treatment, and avoid drinking alcohol on the day of a treatment. Drink plenty of water before and afterward, especially if you plan to take a fitness class or enjoy heat therapy like a sauna or the steam room.

Share nicely. Before entering a soaking pool, swimming pool or whirlpool, always shower. When enjoying the sauna or steam, always sit on your towel and wear the plastic shoes provided by the spa. Women should not shave their legs in the steam room.
