Looking for active organized programs for your kids? Bob Bingham, president and CEO of The Little Gym (thelittlegym.com), shares age-by-age guidelines to help you figure out where to sign up.

0–2: Baby Gymnastics
Infants and toddlers can gain a lot from the basic concepts of gymnastics, which help promote overall physical development. The kind of skills that help build core body strength will also improve little ones’ coordination as they begin to move, climb and roam around. Look for programs that provide an environment where kids can safely discover the world around them.

3–5:
Intro to Active
Physical classes and programs can help preschoolers harness their unlimited energy in a fun yet structured environment. They let kids develop confidence in movement and coordination while also learning to work in a group, follow directions and take turns. Whether ballet or karate, introductory programs encourage physical skills, balance and body control while your child explores interests and talents.

6–8: Sport Specific
After age 6, physical growth goes hand-in-hand with refining fine and gross motor skills. Based on your child’s interests, look for programs in which to build on an existing skill set in a friendly competitive environment; think favorite sports or martial arts. This will encourage development of new techniques and also build strength and endurance—so he’s ready for an active life.
