No, you can’t be at your child’s school all day, every day, when you work full–time, but you can stay involved. Karen Bantuveris, founder and CEO of VolunteerSpot, offers tips on how to contribute creatively as a room mom to your child’s preschool class or grade school classroom.
Log on and serve.
Become a point person to update the class Twitter, Facebook or blog page. Organize a Pinterest page of parenting resources or create electronic sign-up sheets to organize parent readers or snack schedules. Or save your school some bucks by Googling grants to provide funds for field trips or school supplies.
Sign up for after-school stuff.
Get a hall pass from your kid’s teacher to tackle tasks that can only be done after school or on the weekends—your child can help, too, and see you’re active in his academic life. Shop for supplies for the Valentine’s Day party, put together props for the school play, or weed the class garden.
Pitch in remotely.
See if your child’s teacher will let you present to the class virtually—Jetsons style. For example, offer to read and show a picture book for story time via Skype or FaceTime. You can also dial in to make a special cameo and talk about your job on career day or share something unique during show-and-tell.
