Is your child’s backpack wearing him? Most kids haul bags that are way too heavy, which can lead to chronic back and neck pain over time, says Kate Cronan, MD, senior medical editor at KidsHealth.org.
Weigh in.
Children should carry no more pounds than equals their age in years. Though they think it’s cool to sling packs over one shoulder, remind them to use both straps on both shoulders for even weight distribution.
Spread it out.
Dumping it all—books, pencil cases, lunchboxes, water bottles—into the main part of a backpack mean weight sinks to the bottom. Have your child use side pockets whenever possible to balance the weight.
Roll with it.
Consider a rolling backpack, if your school permits them, to get the burden off your child’s back. Too geeky for your kid? Remind him that back problems are even less cool—and that even college kids sport rolling bags.
Tip
For extra comfort, look for packs with padded straps.
