What have you found challenging about juggling work and new motherhood?
The list of challenges you experience as a new mother can be endless, and when you add work to the mix it can become very overwhelming. I am amazed at how this unknown motherly instinct kicked in and taught me how to compartmentalize and manage my time more efficiently. That being said, I also can't get ahead of myself and think of all the things that need to be done inside of each week, so I just try to take it one day at a time, one task at a time.
How do you feel about raising your son, Knox (almost 1), in Hollywood?
Hollywood is a very different place from where I was raised. The town I grew up in [near Las Vegas, NV] was very small, and things were simpler. It was the kind of place where my parents would let my friends and me disappear on our bikes all day as long as we were home in time for dinner. That kind of freedom in a large city can be a much bigger risk for a child now. Then again, any generation born before the ‘90s will probably tell you things are a lot different now than they were back then...
What’s your favorite, perhaps unexpected moment as a mom so far?
The unexpected empowerment that only a woman who has become a mother knows, and the unfailing love for my child that brings unspeakable joy.
Some new moms out there must be envious at how quickly you got your pre-baby body back. What’s your advice for finding the time and energy to take care of yourself after giving birth?
Go at your own pace. Listen to your body. Taking care of yourself is vital to taking care of your child. Everyone is different, but for me, on my most exhausted days, no mater how badly I resisted, once I got to it I always felt better after a workout. It gave me a sense of personal accomplishment, and that in itself was encouraging. And if I just couldn't find the time to get a workout in, I would make up for it by being very conscious of my eating by lowering my calorie intake for the day, and doing my best to stay away from carbs.
This is your last season on The Mentalist. What’s next for you?
It's a new chapter in my life and my career, so anything is possible!
