Gather the family to celebrate the coming of the New Year with these festive family-friendly activities from Abby Larson, founder and editor of Style Me Pretty.
1. Dress up NYE style. We're talking tutus and glitter nail polish for the girls, bow ties and striped socks for the boys. Make your little celebrants feel like they are part of a special night from the very beginning.
2. Build a time capsule. Fill it with favorite memories from the past year. This can include video snippets with New Year's resolutions from the evening, photographs, drawings and even straight-A homework assignments, which all make for perfect time capsule contents. Don't forget to make a pinkie promise to open it exactly a year from now on New Year's Eve 2012!
3. Make your own ball-drop fun. Have each family member balance a balloon on a single finger. Whoever drops it first is out! Continue on until the last balloon is left standing. The winner gets his or her own sparkly New Year's balloon, crafted by painting mod podge glue (available at amazon.com) onto an inflated balloon then coating it with sparkly glitter and sealing it with hairspray.
4. Create your own party accoutrements. From DIY blowers and party hats to streamers, get kids involved in the celebration by getting crafty. There are tons of places online that teach easy step-by-step instructions for these holiday goodies. You can start by checking out the tutorials for the three items above.
5. Host a wish grab. Have your kids write well wishes for their family members (or write the wishes for them) for the New Year. Then tuck them inside of pretty, wrapped boxes. Each family member takes a box and reads the wish out loud for good luck!
