BWOI was formed in 2007 to provide peer support and networking for women who oftentimes are the only, or one of very few, senior level black female executives at her level in her organization.

In addition to Networking and Peer Support for its members, BWOI’s mission is dedicated to supporting and empowering teen girls and Developing a Pipeline of the next generation of influential black women in business.  We offer networking forums where our women can engage and support each other and also look for opportunities to feature their trailblazing work as examples to develop future women of influence.  In support of this mission, BWOI launched its “Pipeline Initiative” in 2011 to support junior to mid-level women aspiring to the next level of influence.  BWOI is also set to launch its “Adopt-a-High School: Career Café” program aimed at inspiring leadership and excellence in teen girls.

With the support of corporate sponsors, BWOI hosts a range of exciting developmental and networking events throughout the course of the year, each in support of BWOI’s mission to provide exposure, development and sisterhood to its executive and pipeline members.

Through thought-provoking discussion, Enhancing Your Personal Power and Presence:  How to BE and Be Seen as a Leader will provide skills and ideas that will help you strengthen your personal power and leadership presence.

Only by identifying those messages will you be able to create new ones that more productively support your goal of career success for yourself and for other women.  This session will answer questions such as:

  1. What are some of the reasons behind women feeling more comfortable helping men than other women?
  2. What female attitudes trigger your shutdown response? (When you decide not to help them.)
  3. What’s the best way for a woman to approach you for help?
  4. Can we create formal training programs within companies for women to mentor women individually and in groups?
  5. What about formalizing a practice to promote women in groups of 3 or more?
  6. What are your points of pride regarding women helping women and what are your points of pain?

3:15 – 4:30 - ROUND III – Critical Conversations - Sponsored by Citi, Macy's, iVillage

A. Career Makers:  Sponsorship: What it Takes, What it Looks Like, and How to Position Yourself?

Sponsorship is often the clandestine, unspoken practice in organizations, critical for navigating careers and promotions, particularly to senior levels. Sponsorship has its defined rules that are transmitted through an informal system that has a common set of cues and signals.  Many Multicultural women have a dual challenge related to sponsorship. First, sponsorship often eludes many of them. Second, some Multicultural women, fortunate to gain the interest of sponsors, often miss the cues. Yet, others have successfully mastered the Sponsorship Game and are thriving!!!!!!!

Join this conversation to explore how to win at the Sponsorship Game. In this session you will identify:

1)  The "Culture of Sponsorship" in your organization
2) "Unspoken Sponsorship Rules and Signals"
3)  How to generate a "Sponsorship Network" for yourself

Conversation Starter:
Vanessa Weaver-Coleman, Ph.D. / CEO and Founder / Alignment Strategies, Inc.

B. Relationship Matters:  Can Career Success and Personal Happiness Co-Exist?

In your experience, do you see women “having it all”, or is that just “airbrushing reality”? Are you able to find role models for career success and personal happiness, or are you one?

Come to this discussion in which we will talk honestly about the aspects of this issue that keep you up at night.  Take this opportunity to examine your assumptions, figure out what you really want, and find out what other like-minded women are doing to find resolution – both personally and in their organizations.  This discussion is relevant for women in all career stages, and whether the happiness you seek has to do with time with family (children or parents), a relationship, more personal fulfillment, or greater pursuit of career ambition. Join us for the new conversation that is possible regarding this central quest of our lives.

Conversation Starter:
Sharon Melnick, Ph.D. / President / Horizon Point, Inc.

C. Culture Shakers:  Refreshing Women’s Advancement Strategy: What’s Important NOW?

2012 is a monumental year for women who are in the lead position in Fortune 500 companies. However, with the highest number ever – 18 - this is still only 3.6% of the available CEO opportunities.

Despite the growing representation of women as CEO's, there remains much room for improvement. Women lag in representation on boards and there are many instances of female executives who are the first or only or both in her organization or functional area, especially for women of color.

  • What trends supported the banner year for women CEO's in 2012 that needs to continue?
  • Can those same practices be applied to board opportunities and other C-Suite positions?
  • What was relevant 5 or 10 years ago that we can no longer rely on?
  • How do we individually and collectively challenge the status quo in order to maintain the requirements and competencies for senior level positions but remove the barriers that are based on outdated norms and standards

We will explore these and other critical elements for making your women's advancement strategy relevant and ready for the marketplace now and in the future.

Nicole Johnson-Reece / Consultant / Diversity Best Practices Consulting
