Why did you decide to start up The Honest Company?
When I was pregnant with Honor [now 3], I wanted to create the healthiest home environment for her. I researched everything I could find, from diapers to laundry detergent. Then I read reports that there are toxic chemicals in baby products. I joined forces with environmentalist Christopher Gavigan, and we developed The Honest Company, which offers eco-friendly, nontoxic family products delivered to your door.

The delivery part is great for working moms.

It’s one-stop shopping. And frankly, when I did make it to the grocery store, I wanted to fill my shopping cart with food, not diapers.

Has Honor adjusted to being a big sister to Haven [5 months]?
She has. I prepped Honor while I was pregnant because I knew it could be difficult for her to share the spotlight since she’d always been the center of our universe. I told her it was way cooler to be the big sister, because she could do so many things that Haven couldn’t, like playing dress-up, going to the park and eating dessert! She was really into that!

Between your business, acting and family, how do you find your personal balance?

I haven’t! I try to figure it out on a daily basis. If I have morning meetings, I make sure I give the girls their baths and do story time at night. My office is a couple of blocks from Honor’s school, so she can play there after classes.

How would you like to spend Mother’s Day?

Sleeping in! I would love to wake up to my girls and just hang out with them at home in our ’jams and be cozy. I would definitely make cupcakes with Honor, which is one of our favorite things to do together.

Is there a nugget you’d like to offer other busy moms who struggle to manage it all?
All moms need confidants who are in their shoes and can relate to what they’re going through. You need a night out together to be who you are, and not feel like you have to be the career woman, wife and mommy—all at once. After all, we’re not superwomen.

But you played one—Sue Storm in The Fantastic Four.
Oh, that was all an illusion!

Be an eco-parent. Use BPA-free water bottles and keep a reusable bag with you for shopping trips.

Eat real food.
I love to cook and use fresh ingredients to prepare meals from scratch. Honor is a great little sous chef.

Go outside.
Our family loves being outdoors. You can’t raise a green child if you don’t get to appreciate nature.

Recycle at home.
I try to repurpose as much as I can. Cardboard boxes become a dollhouse for my daughter.
