Mother's Day Gift...Love in a Box

I recently had an opportunity to read "The God Box" by Mary Lou Quinlan.  If you haven't heard about it yet, I highly recommend you check it out.  I wrote a blurb about it on my blog but you can also read reviews on Amazon.

Great gift for Mother's Day, birthday, and just because it's Friday.

Mom’s the Word!

Mom’s the Word!

We all know that motherhood is a constant juggling act. Between sports practice, school activities, homework and our constantly-buzzing Blackberries, it’s no small miracle when we’re able to get dinner on the table. But just because things don’t always go the way we planned (ok, they rarely go the way we planned) doesn’t mean we can’t stop to enjoy a MomWin: those brief, shining moments when we get it perfectly, shockingly and magically right—or when you just have to laugh that it went wrong.

Confessions of a BadAssMama - The Resentment Edition

I have a confession to make. I've been watching Oprah again - and she's making me think about my life. OK, truth be told it didn't all start with Oprah (reflecting on the crazy-town that is my life is the point of this blog, after all). But several poignant moments in last week's Life Class, combined with an incredible sermon at church today have brought The BadAssMama to her most startling revelation to date.

An End to Rough-Housing

An End to Rough-Housing

Rough-housing is one of those irritations that creep up on a mother.  What starts out innocent jostling can quickly turn rough—especially for siblings of approximate age.  I officially retired from the business of nagging six years ago, yet my nag reflex was still getting triggered by the sounds of rough play.   Over the past two-ish years I have calmly talked to the boys each time rough-housing started looking for the critical moment at which playfulness turns south.  The culprit seemed to be one of two things:

The "F" in FDA Stands for Failure

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s motto, located right on their website homepage, is “protecting and promoting your health” however their recent decision not to ban the use of BPA in food products sends the message that they are more concerned with protecting the pockets of the chemical industry than they are making sound rulings that support our health and development.

First Business Trip Away from Baby

For some working women, business travel is inevitable.  Frequent flier miles, preferred boarding and upgrades to first class are the rewards that are reaped for living life on the road.  In airport lounges stories are swapped about who has survived the worst travel scenarios and the one with the most meal vouchers wins.

April Fools and the Cinnamon Challenge

What it is:  A dare gone viral.  Kids challenge each other to eat a tablespoon of ground cinnamon which will surely result in coughing, gagging, choking, and sometimes vomiting.  Oh, and it burns like heck, too.

Running In Her Shoes

Since there are so few practicing Catholics in my generation, my own mother did double duty at my daughter’s baptismal ceremony as grandmother and godmother.  I found the perfect gift for her, a pair of gold studded, cranberry colored Ugg sandals complete with the signature tuft of Australian wool in the foot-bed.
