Even Mrs. Incredible Gets Tied Up in Knots

Now that you have accepted a job, instead of herding pint size bosses sipping juice boxes and conquering play sets, you are adding a “grown-up” boss to the mix.  Before you even start working on Day 1, your loyalties diverge – you’ve become “Elastigirl”!  For the past several years, you devoted your life to your li

Occupy Your Mother's Day -- 10 Ways to Take Back Time

How did mothers ever get a whole day of our own, start to finish? If you left it up to most of the super-busy women I know, Mother’s Day would get squeezed into two minutes every hour for a few days in a row, threaded between the soccer drop-offs, meetings at the office, and grocery shopping. Imagine...It's a whole, dawn-to-dusk day: 24 hours. 1,440 minutes. 86,400 seconds.

We're #25! We're #25!

25th place, huh?  It'd be awesome if it was someone's ranking in the Boston Marathon but alas, it is the ranking for the U.S. on the 2012 Save the Children Mother's Index Rankings.

We could stump for change, or just move to Canada.

I have an old classmate who, like me, is a lawyer; but unlike me, she lives in Candada.  And unlike me, when her daughter was born, she got an entire year paid parental leave.  I have another classmate from college who married a Dane and lives in Copenhagen, where both she and her husband got a year - each! - paid leave.  I would like to say that I am too old for constant jealousy, but being jealous of their year off is a major activity of mine.

Lighten Our Plates, Or Lift Heavier Weights?

I have been thinking about how the calories in, calories burned model should be so straightforward, but it really isn’t.  Are some women’s magazines giving advice to strong, healthy women to eat 1500 calories per day?   I understand that women with certain body types could maintain their health on 1500 calories per day.

Posted on April 29, 2012

I am in week 35 with pregnancy number 2.  It's been a long haul, but yet - it seems like it has gone very quickly too as I look back.  I ended up in the hospital on Friday night with contractions that were around 2 minutes apart.  I panicked a little, knowing I was NOT ready for baby girl to come out for many different reasons.  I kept telling the nurse, "This is NOT going to happen tonight.  One - she is too early and two - I am NOT ready!"  Luckily after 4 hours of monitoring, I slowed down on the contractions and didn't dilate any more and they let me go hom

What to Read When You're on Leave

If you've found yourself in the midst of the before, during or after of maternity leave, you may also be finding yourself a little lost.  Who am I?  What am I becoming?  What do I want to do?  Do I want a career?  No doubt, it's a time of uncertainty so you are probably seeking out resources to help you make sense of it all.

Running Makes Sense For This Mom

In less than one month, I’ll be taking part in a bike race that happens to be sandwiched between 5K runs.  I haven’t met many other moms who take on competition with the level of intensity that I do. Last week I took advantage of being on school vacation, which fell four weeks after my hubby’s school vacation, by scheduling some extra-long runs and bike rides.

Top 10 Things My Kids Will Likely Say in Therapy

Posted on April 23, 2012

Take an imperfect person with her own baggage. Mix in nine months of out-of-control hormones, years of sleep deprivation and no formal training. What do you get? Your average mother - and the perfect recipe for years of therapy.

I don't know what's on YOUR list, but here are the top ten things that my kids are likely to say when they hit the therapist's couch years from now:
