Conference Calls: A Free Tool for the Highly Distracted

Conference Calls: A Free Tool for the Highly Distracted

It is often assumed that working at home is easy.

I disagree.

Convenient? Yes.

Easy?

Not if you are prone to being distractable.

I can be generating a list of contacts when the phone rings. I stop what I am doing to take the call rather than letting it go to voicemail.

I may be writing a blog post when a text comes in. I stop my train of thought to answer the text.

The dryer button dings. I stop whatever I'm currently working on to unload the machine.

It's kind of like, If You Give a Mouse a Cookie.

Chronicles from the Pink Suite

Chronicles from the Pink Suite

I am going to share a story from the Pink Suite, one of many that changed the mission and values in my life. It is June 24, 1993, my son had been sick for several weeks and I had taken him from one doctor to another, hoping to get an answer to his mounting pain and illness.

If I Had the Time to Fill Out a Survey...

Like most people, my email inbox is full of promotional emails...newsletters, etc.. So I "unsubscribe" to ones I don't find useful.

I just clicked the "unsubscribe" button on an HP Newsletter.

They made me fill out a survey before they would allow me to unsubscribe.

If I had the time or inclination to fill out a survey I probably wouldn't be unsubscribing.

Does anyone else think this is outrageous?!!!

Back to School

Posted on March 15, 2012

So in my never ending quest to find a job and not get one, I decided to go back to school. I applied to Walden University and I got in. Yae me!!! I am going for my Bachelor of Business Administration degree with an HR Management Concentration. I have experience in Human Resources but haven’t received any call backs in the year that I have been looking for a job. Actually it`s been over a year. I was told by a recruiter that experience doesn’t matter as much as a degree which makes no sense to me. I would rather have someone who has knowledge about the job than a degree.

Reconnecting With My Gift

I’m sitting here trying to find the right words to express how I feel… The last week and a half have sort of been a blur…

Spring Forward! Daylight Saving Starts Sunday

Daylight Saving starts at 2 a.m. this Sunday in the U.S. except in Arizona and Hawaii. Set your clocks one hour ahead when you go to bed Saturday night. You may feel a little groggy on Sunday if you lose an hour of sleep Saturday night.

Too bad we can't just push a button to reset our internal clocks!

P.S. Don't forget the clock in your car.

Organize after school activities with wipe boards

Organize after school activities with wipe boards

It was when my youngest of 3 started to get involved in sports that I thought to myself  ”this is crazy!”   I had no idea how I was going to get everyone to where they needed to be post school and following homework. It used to be the case the kids would all play the same sport, but I’m finding as they get older they are each starting to venture off and do their own thing. This sometimes means being in 3 different places at the same time.

Becoming a blogger

Becoming a blogger

When I learned I was approved to become a blogger for Working Mother Magazine I did what most people do with big news: I posted it to Facebook. I was grateful for the support of my Facebook friends and family. I consider myself a writer, and have thought many times about creating a blog. The allure of getting exposure to Working Mother readers is preferable to a Blogger account and I welcome the discipline of producing one to two blogs a week, every week.

The Brain Book: Staying Organized While Working At Home

Thanks for the warm welcome here at workingmother.com and for checking out my first post.

I am often asked, "How do you do it?"

Do what?

Run a business from home, AND run a home (shopping, cleaning, cooking, homework, school/church responsibilities, etc.)

My quick answer is, "I drink a lot of coffee."

But really, while that list looks daunting, it truly isn't.
