Remember to Keep Cash in Your Emergency Kit

In an emergency or disaster you may not be able to get cash OR use a credit card. During Superstorm Sandy many ATM's didn't work or ran out of money. To protect cash in your emergency kit, wrap it in foil and stuff it in a screw-top jar. Resist the temptation to use the jar instead of an ATM just for convenience. It's easy to forget to replenish it! See the latest issue of HabiNews for more emergency prep tips.

Hope you have a warm, dry and safe Thanksgiving.

How Many Hours Do You Work?

Posted on October 11, 2012

Before I started working from home full time (you’ll either hate me or pity me for that) my office was in one of the many featureless, slightly derelict brick buildings you see on all government campuses. I didn’t actually work for the government, just borrowed office space from them because it was convenient to the research population being studied by the grant I was a part of.

Why Do I Over Commit?

Why Do I Over Commit?

Confession: Why do I always over commit? When will I learn my
lesson? When I worked in my employer’s NY office I was so guilty of this. My
manager would come to me on a Monday morning with an innocent request, like
“When do you think you can have Project XYZ complete?”(Isn’t he kind? I’ve
worked for some who would not ask but demand

Tip of the Week - School Day Debrief

Tip of the Week - School Day Debrief

Update your after school debrief to focus on your kids, not your kids’ problems

What is a school day debrief?  The Q&A right after school.

Why It’s Important:  With the right questions parents can increase their social capital—every single school day!

The Problem:  Parents aren’t looking to connect to their kids; they are looking to connect to their kids’ problems.  It sounds similar, but it’s as different as night and day.

Are you a good student and a tired woman?

Are you a good student and a tired woman?

Raise your hand if you raise your hand too much.

With both of my kids now back to school -- my self-employed career now ready to re-engage for fall -- I could feel the itch of post-it notes and to-do checklists and "new ways to keep busy" automatically prickling to the surface.

I read recently of someone who would sit down with his staff on Monday mornings and list off the 15 "priorities" they had to accomplish.

Professionalism at Home

Professionalism at Home

One of benefits of working from home is the ability to have a relaxed atmosphere. You can set your own schedule, work around your family and even lounge in your pajama pants from time to time.

However … one of the drawbacks of working from home is the ability to have a relaxed atmosphere. Yep, you read that right. As much as I love working from the comfort of my home, there is a serious side to my business as well. There are times when I must set aside my comfort and ensure that my clients get the very best from me.

Mission: Organization

This morning I focused on creating order amidst hot spots of clutter and chaos a few minutes at a time. I followed these simple rules for moving quickly and efficiently:

Memories

The best part of working so hard is seeing the finished product. I just got  my second blog book in the mail today! They look so professional! It feels like I actually wrote a book when I looked through it. If that's how writing a real book feels like-man, I can't wait for the opportunity! I also have put down some more new ideas down for my blog. This creativity of mine is at it's best these days! In the mean time, I guess I'll just work on building my skills up! In other news, my Self magazine also came in the mail.

OK, so I've been MIA from Working Mother lately. I'm in the middle of a divorce AND moving in 13 days from a large family home to a 1200 square foot apartment. (I've dubbed it Le Petite Penthouse.)

Fortunately, I'm in the organizing business, so things should go pretty smoothly. Since I'm selling/donating/junking a lot of stuff, I'm also updating my home inventory.

Here's an easy way to keep a home inventory.

I'll be back in August after I dig my way out from under the boxes.

Finally Finished What I Started

For all  the people that don't know, The Hunger Games Is one of the best books I've read hands down! It took me forever to read it! It also reminds me of rhis other series I read-The Twilight series.I will be getting started on the second part of the series soon! I bet the movie's great too! The rest of my day will be  spent getting my exercise and writing a little more. I have some posts that I'd like to share with everyone about how I've been doing on my first summer alone. Man, I'm glad that I could still write through all this!
