Experience Kim Eiler's CCSS Reading Workshop

One idea that is transforming education is that all public schools are moving from state to national standards, referred to as “Common Core State Standards”.  Most educators are applying these ideas to their current curriculum. The standards from the Common Core (which have been adopted by public schools in nearly all of the fifty states) such as "speak audibly, and express thoughts, feelings and ideas clearly" can be traced from K to 12th grade.  Nobody could possibly argue against these being important life skills for students of all ability levels.

Lists are Amazing

In my everlasting quest to find the magic recipe that will create that life of complete wellness and balance I’ve come across many different strategies and approaches. Many. Let’s just say there’s a little something for everyone, and I’m totally cool with that.

Week 9: Liz’s Response: Weight Loss is our Decision to Make!

I love how Jennifer writes that she is excited about what might happen when she sticks with this, instead of if she sticks with it. Sticking with a healthy eating program is in your control. It is just a decision to make, and a mindset to stick with. The fact is, for most people we are the only ones who put food in our mouths. So weight loss is ultimately a decision that we can own. You can do this. You can surround yourself with healthy food choices. You can bring your lunch to work. You can pack healthy snacks.

The Five Words that are Helping Me Heal My Body Image Woes

The Five Words that are Helping Me Heal My Body Image Woes

I think about body image a lot. Like a lot, a lot. I can’t really recall a time that it wasn’t on my mind. I was thin as a kid and then when I hit middle school I put on a lot of weight. From that point on I’ve been thin (not that I believed that at the time, of course) and voluptuous. I’ve spoken at dozens of events about the importance of saying a big f*ck you to the media for their role in creating an unattainable beauty standard that leaves millions of us feeling like crap about ourselves (because we aren’t all a size 0, white, with blond hair and blue eyes).

For many of us, travel often means putting our healthy eating and exercise routine on hold until we're back from our trip and back into our familiar routine. This can also mean that because of this vacation from our healthy habits, we have an extra few pounds to deal with along with the need to reignite our fitness motivation once we're back home. Is there a way to keep those healthy habits working for you while you're away? Of course! So I created the healthy eating and exercise travel kit.

Week 9: Could This Really Be Working?

Still busy (so busy!) at work these days – and so busy at home. We’ve been doing some renovation work that seemingly never ends and always fills every waking moment of the weekend.

And yet, I’m finding time to move – and I’m sticking to my eating plan. AND I’ve lost 8 pounds.

Could this really be working?

Mood Moves

Lately my stress levels have been out of control. I'm pretty much miserable these days. Between {what seems like} living out of bags and sharing a small house with five other people, life is really hectic. While the end of our construction is in sight, we're not quite to the finish line yet and I'm beyond ready to have my own home again!
