Chemicals of Concern to Our Children

Posted on March 07, 2012

As moms, we all want to protect our children from harm. But what if that harm is invisible, occurs daily, and is almost impossible to stop without government intervention?

There’s a growing consensus that our exposure to toxic chemicals in consumer products is a risk factor for many serious diseases. Children are exposed to these chemicals at an alarming rate and as a result, there are long-term implications for their health and development.

Talking With: The Cast of The Lorax

Remember growing up when the “Give a hoot, don’t pollute” campaign started? We really have come a long way, baby! Taking care of our environment is still ever-present just with a shift from “teaching” to throw trash in a can to ending the use of plastic water bottles and encouraging re-usable grocery bags. In fact, it’s interesting how timeless the message of The Lorax really is!

Citrus Lane Monthly Care Packages: The Perfect Gift for the Mom (and Baby) Who Has Everything!

I’ve been wanting to review this product for a while and every time I actually sit down to write about it, life gets in the way. But I am really excited about this and wanted to share it with other moms and moms-to-be because it is really a fun way to try new things.

I won’t keep you in suspense any longer. The newest product of my affection is Citrus Lane’s monthly care packages. Here's the details:

Certified Preowned ...Diapers

A recent search for cloth diapers revealed certified preowned diapers. Gross. For me this is like buying your underwear at Goodwill. It should only be done if you are really in dire straits and cannot afford any alternatives.

When I first started changing my eating habits, one of the biggest challenges I faced was understanding food labels at the grocery store.

40 Years Go Into The Debris Box

40 Years Go Into The Debris Box

My husband and I are splitting up after 40 years of marriage, 32 of which have been spent in the home we are about to sell. Obviously, we need to clear the clutter before putting it on the market. I didn't think either of us were "hoarders." But now that the debris box has arrived and we have only three days to clean out the house I realize we've been keeping much more than we should have. We'll sell some valuable items on ebay or Craigs List. We'll gather the rest of the usable items in the garage and invite friends and relatives over to take anything they want.

Hidden Hazards in the Nursery

What would you say if I told you that a high number of baby products contain toxic chemicals? What if I told you those toxic chemicals were in the form of flame retardants that are used in things like nursing pillows, car seats, changing pads and bassinet pads? And what if I said there is currently nothing in the law protecting us from these harmful toxins?

What Daydreams May Come As I Run and Jump and Step!

What Daydreams May Come As I Run and Jump and Step!

This past August, about a year after my daughter was born, I entered a 12 mile road race.  I felt almost no pain during the race, and comfortably ran consistent 8 minute miles or a little faster. While running, I pictured myself as a prehistoric mother, running across a wide beautiful plain in search of food for my baby.  I thought to myself, I'm not just a runner, but a mother-runner. My ancestors survived because they had the ability to run long distances and to also speed up to catch game.

Tea - Not Just for Throwing in the Harbor Anymore

Growing up 1/2 Canadian, I've always had an appreciation for tea.  While I drank more coffee, tea did make regular appearances in my hot beverages rotation.  I love hot beverages - coffee, tea, hot chocolate, hot cider, and hot toddies!  Just to name a few.

Carcinogens, Endocrine Disruptors & Teratogens, Oh My!

Posted on December 06, 2011

A few years ago I started to learn about the utter lack of regulation by the FDA of many of the products used by women and children. Did you know that most of the ingredients in your body lotion, shampoo, baby shampoo, deodorant, shaving cream, perfume, tooth paste and other similar items are unregulated?
