Special Treats

Special Treats

My (almost) three year old is very fond of sweets, as are many children.  He relentlessly makes requests for “special treats” and finds any occasion to be an appropriate time to have one.  Now, my friends and family know that I am somewhat of a health nut and eat a diet very low in sugar.  My son, however, is a very picky eater.

It Was Professor Plum in the Library with a Candlestick

It Was Professor Plum in the Library with a Candlestick

I wish I were only referring to a game of Clue. In reality, it was Lexi in a UPS store with pink cardstock paper As a mother, I always knew this day would come, but I didn’t know when, where and what item would entice Lexi enough to commit grand larceny.

Our Inner Control Panel

Posted on December 15, 2012
Today I did it. I went to Control Panel and clicked "Accessibility Options."  Some of you will know exactly what that means. For the uninitiated (or Mac users) "Accessibility Options" is what you click if you want to change your font settings; in other words, it's what you click to make the default font size larger because you're getting old and losing near-sightedness (as if being far-sighted and having glasses since 4th grade wasn't enough!). Ouch!

Hi-Ho, Hi-Ho, It's Back to Work I Go

It's officially been 12 weeks and it's back to the workforce I go....with mixed emotions.

Holiday Beauty With My Best Fashion Friend

Holiday Beauty With My Best Fashion Friend

My third holiday season as a mommy is upon me, and for the third year in a row I am rejoicing in my having the best fashion friend that a girl could ever have. Our complimentary outfits give me a sense of peace during this busy time of year. My daughter and I attended our local Italian American Society's Annual Children's Christmas party wearing shades of red, grey and navy. Our excitement for fashion usually spills over to the other girls whom we know.

Stressed or Desserts - you decide.

Ever realized that "stressed" is
"desserts" spelled backwards?!?
If you ask me, it's not just by chance.
It's not a conspiracy, either.  It
really is one of life's most important choices that we face: do you go with
'stressed,' or do you go with the desserts?

Choosing to have a Magnificent Day!

Choosing to have a Magnificent Day!

My daughter recently performed in the opening act of Disney's Lighting of Magnificent Mile in downtown Chicago.  The parade is held on a Saturday with the rehearsal for the opening number held Friday evening at 5:30 at a downtown school location.  When I found out that we needed to drive the 35 miles to downtown on a Friday evening; my eyes rolled back in my head … TRAFFIC was all I could think of.

Surviving the Holidays, Yikes!

Run! Duck for cover...The Holidays are here...arguably one of the the most stressful times of the year!

A Dietitian's View on Twinkies

Posted on November 27, 2012

Were you one of the panicked buyers who recently paid $20 or $30 for a box of Twinkies? If not, did you still lament the potential, although not likely, extinction of this spongy yellow cream filled cake?

I don’t know about you, but my feelings are decidedly mixed about the fate of the Twinkie. When I was growing up, Hostess products were pretty much a staple in our house. While I did indulge in the Twinkie every now and then, I must admit that my favorite was the cupcake, with all of the chocolate and cream-filled goodness it provided. So, the Twinkie was not my “go to.”

Urgent Care Billing Department

November 25, 2012

To Whom It May Concern:

In the future, you might find that you’ll receive payment faster if you do not send the bill to our 6-year-old child.  While we realize that she was the patient to whom the bill refers, she does not have her own insurance nor the means to pay for her Urgent Care bill.
