Tell Your Kids to Get Off the Couch

Posted on June 27, 2012

You do make a difference . . .to me

I found this post from a blog I started but never really had a chance to get going . . thought I would share here because the message was very inspiring to me.  The picture is from our trip to Ethiopia.

Moms Do The Summer Solstice Trail Race In Hebron, CT

Even before 8:30AM this morning, dozens of super moms and dads had completed a 5.5 mile trail race through Gay City State Park in Hebron, Connecticut.  Luckily, it had not rained within the last few days, so the frequency of mud puddles was reduced to those near streams and springs. Sharpen Your Skills With A Volunteer Position

Taking a leave of absence from work to parent pre-school age children, or facing a layoff does not mean that you have to take a break from using your skills as a professional.  Since my daughter was born two years ago today, I no longer work during the summer months or have a second job after the school day ends.  My goal to become an expert on being a stay-at-home parent over the next eight wee

Don't Eat the Children!

(That is what the picture, illustrated by Ms. Lexi Hurst, says. The picture is an image of Pac-Man eating not the ghosts, but small children.) But it represents sage advice I received from a friend this week. Let me explain lest you start to wonder about me…or report me to the authorities. While in Guatemala a couple of weeks ago, I learned that some of the villagers were hesitant to speak with us or interact with us because a rumor had spread that we “gringoes” were there to eat their children.

That sounds so obvious, but every year 7.6 million children lose that chance.  Right now Save the Children is asking mothers around the world to raise their voices to help more children everywhere survive. Together we can insist that our children’s health and wellbeing is more than a personal priority – it should be a global priority. Death from preventable causes like pneumonia, diarrhea and newborn complications are no longer acceptable.  World leaders are meeting in Washington, DC this week to discuss how to reduce child mortality in the years to come.

Working Mother International

I recognize that working mothers exist all over the world so this isn’t a new discovery for me, but I recently spent a week in Chimaltenango, Guatemala, and my appreciation for working mothers increased ten-fold.
