Whether we pay tribute to fathers with an official day once a year, or esteem that special dad all year long, fathers are meant to be honored. A man who takes care of, spends time with and loves their child is worth celebrating. It doesn’t matter if they’re a blue collar worker, struggling to make ends meet; or an A-list celebrity, traveling the globe but still keeping family in tow, a dad is a dad at any status level.

Taya Kyle, the wife of the late hero Chris Kyle has a new job. Taya is dedicated to keeping Chris’ legacy alive, after he was murdered in February of this year. Summer is just around the corner, and with the hot months fast approaching people are stocking up on sunscreen to avoid the harmful effects of over exposure to the sun.
And, because of the negative stigma associated with too much fun in the sun, like skin cancer, cataracts and wrinkles, many people are taking the extreme step and avoiding the sun altogether, opting instead to take in the hot summers days indoors.

After returning to work from a 12-week maternity leave of which my pay consisted of a little short-term disability and what vacation days I had saved (which meant only using five days during my 40 weeks of pregnancy for sick or vacation), I tried to do it all. Why do we do this to ourselves? I was being cheap, or I had a lot of pride or a lot to prove (you pick), and I thought I could and should be able to put 125% into my roles as mother, wife and employee. Sadly, on the journey to adulthood, oftentimes our fault-finding outweighs the positive aspects of the relationship with our children.

Is it self-centered to continue to be ourselves after becoming mothers? If a woman continues to pursue her career and personal interests after giving birth to and/or adopting a child, some people consider her to be selfish. Over the past five years my friends Jammy Davies (pronounced Jay-me) and Shari Deluca have been teaching my students about careers in the law, and the implications that our laws have on daily life.

My 14 year old just got back from a two day overnight to Disneyland. I’ve lived in Los Angeles for 24 years and only today did I learn about “Grad Night” from my colleagues at work. It’s a time-honored southern California tradition – one night in mid-June when Disneyland is open all night for high school seniors, with chaperones, of course. At our school it’s a tradition for the 8th grade graduating class to go on a different night. Did she miss us? Heck, no.
