Health Care Service Corp.
Health Care Service Corporation honors employees who promote diversity and inclusion at work with its President’s Diversity Award.
Ever heard of Diversity Day? At this leading health insurer, the country’s fourth largest, it’s a paid floating holiday that employees can take to attend an event related to their heritage. To encourage workers to celebrate their varied backgrounds, the company provides diversity training to all employees, which it hopes will broaden awareness of cultural differences throughout the ranks. Boosting the number of multicultural women in management is a focus, so headquarters requires senior leaders to regularly review employee demographics in an attempt to improve diversity. When a new management job opens up, the company requires a diverse slate of candidates from which to choose. Multicultural women looking to move up can enroll in a monthly mentoring pilot program or the newly introduced KPMG Executive Leadership Institute for Women, which features four annual discussions with local leaders about what it takes to achieve success. Beyond that, the company also pays for high-potential women to attend a four-month program called Leading Women Executives. Its sessions teach the staffers to knock down barriers and learn the skills that will help them to be more effective employees.
