What We Love

When three men started this midsized law firm 30 years ago, their first hire was a female attorney.  Today, more than half of the 61 lawyers at this San Francisco–based firm are women, as are its managing partner and three of five corporate practice group leaders. An esprit de corps is fostered across the ranks because of a simple policy: No internal competition. Partners don’t have to fulfill billable-hour minimums, a rarity in law firms, and their income isn’t tied to the clients they bring in but rather to factors such as hours worked and firm leadership and management.
