Does your resume need a makeover? Phrases like “extensive experience” and “proven track record” are overused and can seem meaningless to a potential employer, according to a survey from LinkedIn.com. Try these quick-fix tips from Robert Hosking, executive director of OfficeTeam, a worldwide staffing service.
Quantify successes.
Be specific and delete generic terms that don’t really say much to an employer. Include that you increased sales by 200 percent instead of saying you’re “results oriented.”
Do a timer test.
Read your resume aloud and watch the clock. If it takes more than two minutes, it needs editing.
Clear the clutter.
Hobbies and special interests are the least important components of your resume. Give them one line at most.
