My team must stay until daily assignments are finished. One colleague I sit near slacks off a lot, so the rest of us have to stay late to complete the work. It drives me crazy, but I don’t want to tattle. Still, should I?

You shouldn’t tattle. It’s rarely efective—and your boss will think you’re whining. Instead, say to the co-worker, “I really can’t stay late. Let’s get everything done, okay?” Maybe if she’s pushed to be accountable, she’ll be more productive. Another approach is to keep updating her with your progress: “Another one done! You?” Finally, try “I’m going to the boss. I’m working hard and we’re not finishing. They need to lighten the load.” Make her feel part of a team so she’ll be less apt to let it down.
