As I thought of this title, I couldn't help wondering if it sounded a bit like Sarah Jessica Parker in Sex and the City. I envisioned her sitting on the floor of her NYC apartment typing away on her Mac ending an article with a question like this. I thought of this question after realizing how righteous I was in my 30's, or perhaps naive is a more accurate term. I remember thinking and saying numerous times I would never get Botox. Those women are insane, self-obsessed and must be married to husbands that are very demanding of their appearances.
When I was in my 20's, I was too busy worrying and living like a 20 year old to appreciate my very youthful appearance. Though looking back at those pictures I wonder how I wasn't more worried about walking out the door with ultra bushy eyebrows and hair bigger than my face. In my late 20's, I started to get my act together and eventually moved from NYC to San Francisco for a new career. Shortly after moving to San Francisco, I met my now husband who is 9 years my senior. Those first years were fantastic, not only because I was falling in love, but I was falling in love with a man that made me even look younger. And he would never judge me or tell me how to look.
After having my first and only child at 35, I started to feel a little older. Actually, not feel but look older. I needed to dye my hair more frequently and I remember my sister offering me recommendations on eye lotions, unsolicited of course. Now at 40, with days until my 41st birthday, I am constantly looking in the mirror at my wrinkles. Most of the lines I'm pretty good with as I attribute them to years of sun exposure from running which makes me feel better about their origin, whether it's actually true or not. On the other hand, I haven't found a way to rationalize the wrinkles under my eyes. And being a problem solver, I can think of an easy way of addressing this. Botox. It's become so mainstream and acceptable as dying one's hair it makes it a bit more digestable. But then I think, is there anyone that has actually done Botox that doesn't look like they have? So then I get Botox and look younger until I smile which is kind of the problem I had in the first place! And then the real problem occurred when my husband walked in on me watching the Real Housewives of Miami where Botox is as common place as brushing one's teeth and faces look as distorted as a funny mirror at a carnival.
So I guess in reality, I'm not quite at the point of trying it but I'm definitely smart enough now not to say I'll never do it!
