NYC Signs Bill To Accommodate Employees' Religious Observances at Work

New York City workers no longer have to choose between leaving the office early for religious observances or completing their work on time. Mayor Michael Bloomberg signed a law today requiring NYC employers to provide “reasonable accommodation” for the religious practices of all of its employees.

“This legislation contains a non-exhaustive list of factors to be considered in determining whether an accommodation would pose an undue economic hardship and also provides that an accommodation poses undue hardship if it results in an employee being unable to perform the essential functions of the employee’s job,” said Mayor Bloomberg.

Sponsored by Councilman Mark Weprin of Oakland Gardens, NY, the bill is an amendment to NYC’s Human Rights Law. Weprin stated that the bill would offer employees the flexibility of practicing their religious beliefs in the workplace in conjunction with performing their job—a benefit that all busy working moms could appreciate.
