November 17th is World Prematurity Day

Posted on November 11, 2011

Once again we are talking about saving the babies.

13 million babies are born preterm each year and, of those, one million die as a result of their early birth. On November 17th, with partners in Europe, Africa and Asia, The March of Dimes will recognize the first-ever World Prematurity Day to honor these infants and raise awareness about the importance of striving to give every baby a healthy start in life.

Preterm birth is the leading cause of neonatal death and babies who survive an early birth often face the risk of lifelong health challenges, such as breathing problems, cerebral palsy, intellectual disabilities and others.

You can show your support for global prematurity prevention efforts by going to facebook.com/WorldPrematurityDay and joining the virtual campaign by changing their Facebook status to reflect a prematurity awareness message.
