Mom runs a marathon and delivers baby soon after

It’s not every day that a full-term pregnant woman runs a marathon—and delivers just hours after. But Amber Miller also doesn’t seem like your ordinary mom. At almost 39 weeks pregnant, she participated in a Chicago marathon and ended up running and walking the 26.2-mile course in six hours, 25 minutes and 50 seconds. She crossed the finished line around 3 p.m., and ended up delivering a healthy, seven-pound baby girl by 10:30 p.m. the same day.

Sunday’s marathon was in fact Miller’s eight marathon and her third while pregnant She received medical clearance to participate in the marathon from her doctor, though she signed up for it before knowing that she was pregnant. Even still, she found enough energy to complete what she had set out to do—and she now faces judgment from those who question her decision to take on an endurance challenge while pregnant.

Pregnant women usually don’t get enough exercise, and those who do usually don’t push themselves beyond a certain point. But expecting moms should exercise since there are many benefits that can come from low impact activities like walking, swimming and doing prenatal yoga. Running a marathon? Probably not.

What are your thoughts on this? Do you think what the marathon mom did was risky?

I have a bad back from just going to the gym. I couldn't imagine what this would do to her back over time. Nothing worse than a slipped disc and trying to pick up a baby. פורום פסיכומטרי

All's well that ends well. I admire the courage and strenght to go ahead and run. We really are tougher than we look, why in my grandmother's generation they practically stopped from harvesting the corn for an afternoon break to have the baby and then they were back at it the next morning. I think there would have been a huge outcry though had there been any complications with the run or the baby ..

My first thought is, AWESOME

My first thought is, AWESOME JOB! Women will continue to pass their judgments upon women who are carrying a child on subjects varying from your choice of stroller, your decision upon a name for the fetus, and of course the extent of which you exercise during the pregnancy. I am currently 32 weeks pregnant, and I partake in Crossfitmom 5/7 days a week. You would not believe (okay, you probably would) the amount of snide comments and glares I received when I do pull-ups, overhead weight lunches, regular pushups, ect. ALL of which my OB-GYN is aware of and approves due to 1) Participating in Crossfit prior to conceiving, 2) I always keep my HR below 160 per his request, and 3) I have a 'normal' pregnancy that doesn't limit my ability to continue maintaining fitness during the pregnancy. If she was fit before pregnancy, which it states she was running marathons prior to this, and she not only has the approval of her OB-GYN but she also sticks with what her body tells her (IE: She walked and ran the marathon versus pushing her body to run the complete marathon), and she is staying hydrated throughout both the training and the final event, it IS safe. It's the women who weren't avid runners / gym goers prior to conceiving that generally end up with either complications during the pregnancy, or simple sprains/strains due to over exertion. I'm sure there are a variety of women who have varying opinions upon this subject but in the end her baby girl is just as you stated, healthy. Good for her! :)
