Most of us working moms have indulged our fantasies in dreaming about our perfect day. But a new study, “Just a Perfect Day: Developing a Happiness Optimized Day Schedule,” takes the concept to a higher level.
Researchers asked more than 900 employed women (average age 38) about their daily activities and which ones made them feel the happiest. The goal was to discover what schedule of and amount of time doing various activities would leave women feeling the most satisfied. The study, recently published in the Journal of Economic Psychology, reveals that on a perfect day, snuggling with hubby trumps working, women would rather exercise than nap, and commuting to work would eat up the least time of all.
The average woman’s perfect day would consist of:
- Intimate relations: 106 minutes
- Socializing with friends: 82 minutes
- Relaxing: 78 minutes
- Prayer/meditation: 73 minutes
- Eating: 75 minutes
- Exercising: 68 minutes
- Watching TV: 68 minutes
- Shopping: 56 minutes
- Cooking: 50 minutes
- Talking in the phone: 57 minutes
- Computer/Email/Internet: 48 minutes
- Housework: 47 minutes
- Napping: 46 minutes
- Childcare: 46 minutes
- Working: 36 minutes
- Commuting: 33 minutes
Although the breakdown of this Happiness Optimized Day Schedule is not completely surprising, it does affirm that time well spent for working moms is time with the people we love. Second only to that is time to pay attention to our own well being, both physically and spiritually. And realizing what it takes to make us happy can help us reconsider how we prioritize our time.
