Whether you work outside of the house, or whether you are a stay-at-home mom, life seldom slows down for us to catch our breath, or bask in a daydream, or even watch the sunrise in the morning. The undeniable fact is, there will always be tasks that need our attention, chores that need our doing, foods that need our preparing, mail that needs our sorting, and the endless list that keeps on going. However, when it comes to our health, finding time to relax is a must. Studies have proven just how important relaxation is. It helps to strengthen the immune system; it aids in the body’s healing process; it reduces the risk of heart disease, plus it helps combat one of our most dangerous enemies...stress.
Even with all the well-known health benefits that come with relaxation, many moms simply don’t do it. Ironically, those same moms work hard to be stress-free. Sounds oxymoronic, right? Our jobs will constantly require more from us; our kids will always need extra time; and our lives will continue to be challenging. But, the truth is, those are the very reasons why we need to take time to relax.
Below are three ways moms can get in their daily dose of relaxation.
1. Put the Kids to Bed on Time – Moms, the longer you let the kids stay up past their bedtime, the more your relaxation time is being infringed upon. Even if it’s daddy’s night to tuck them in, if bedtime is 8pm then stick to it. And, when the kids do go down, use that time wisely. Don’t do the chores, or work, or whatever else is on your to-do list. Sit down for an hour and watch some TV, or read a book, or take that well deserved bubble bath. Use that mommy-time for you.
2. Wake up 30-Minutes before the Household – I realize this might be hard for all the sleep-deprived moms out there, but if you can pull this off, it will be one of the best times in your day. The house is quiet, the sky is dark, and you can get in that first cup of Joe before the hussle and bussle of life gets going. I can’t think of a better time for relaxation than waking up before the world, at the start of the day.
3. Take a Mid-Day Break – It doesn’t matter if you work inside or outside of the house, find 15 minutes and make it yours. If I’m working from the office, sometimes I’ll take a cup of tea and just go outside by myself and sit down to relieve tension. Or, if I’m home with the kids I’ll give them an activity to keep them busy for a little while and sit on the couch and enjoy the semi-quiet. There are ways to get in that 15-minute break, but you might need to use a bit of creativity to find it.
If you think a well-rested mom is oxymoronic then chances are you need to relax more than anybody, but you probably wont set aside time to do it. However, if you realize that relaxation is a necessity to your overall good health, then you’ll make time for it everyday. And, when you give yourself over to that leisure time, you’ll find yourself becoming a less stressed, noticeably healthier, and a whole lot happier mom.
