The Best Day Ever Is...

Is yet to come. Did you know that? I learned this truth as my daughter was skipping into school yesterday. She turned to me and said, “Mommy, tomorrow is going to be the best day ever!”

Uh oh. That’s what I was thinking because I couldn’t think of what was going to happen on Friday that would cause her to proclaim that. I get tunnel vision during the weeks I teach leadership workshops. Was there a party going on at school? Did I forget about a field trip? Was she having a special guest in class? Did I agree to a sleepover with some kindergartners and forget about it. I felt as though admitting to Lexi that I couldn’t remember a significant event in her five-year-old life would damage my credibility in her eyes.

With a sigh, I asked, “Why is tomorrow going to be the best day ever, Lexi?”

“Because, mommy, every day is a new day full of surprises for us.”

This week, a friend commented that she seemed to be 5 going on 25. That’s not far from the truth. I did not realize how much she had to teach me until I started this blog. What about the whole “Carpe Diem!” Seize the day! Our best day is today, not yesterday, not tomorrow, but today. That’s wisdom right there because there's no guarantee we'll have a tomorrow. This is practical wisdom.

“Tell me more, sweetie.”

“Today is going to be great. I’m going to school and can play with my friends. We have a puppet show in the library later. But I don’t know what will happen tomorrow, and it could be better than today! That makes it tomorrow the best day ever!”

I get it. And it’s so true. I am known to be quite expressive and have stated, “This is the best day ever because x, y, and z happened.” But then I discover that relationships, like marriage, deepen over time, new experiences shatter old paradigms, and life is just sweeter. I don’t think Lexi was suggesting that we dismiss the joy of the day in front of us, but that we should be genuinely excited about the prospect of what is yet to come.

Anyone know the Latin phrase for, "The best is yet to come?"
