Watch Out For The Running Tomato!

Watch Out For The Running Tomato!

If you were a really unfortunate member of my gym two year ago, you might have seen a glimpse of my protruding tomato-colored belly before I ducked into the locker room. For the last ten weeks of my pregnancy in 2010, I sported an orange-red, size ten tankini during my mile or so swims.  I purchased the unflattering tankini at a great discount, probably for less than twenty dollars. My regular, size six Speedo one pieces fit until about thirty-two weeks into my pregnancy, but then they became obscenely tight and oddly low cut, since I was sporting boobies for the first time in my life.  I wanted to continue swimming laps until giving birth, since this is a safe, high-intensity, no impact activity. One of the other work-mom bloggers asked for funny stories about maternity clothes. My husband called me a “running tomato”, and said that it alarmed people to see me running from the pool to the locker room. The towels that they give out at our gym are not large enough to cover a pregnant belly, so I would just make a run for it. Someone did ask me if everything was all right one time.  I just didn’t want anyone to see me in such horrible swim attire. Luckily there are no photos of me in the “tomato tankini”. It took my baby a long time to push out my strong abdominal muscles, but she finally did after about eight months. I was fortunate to only have to spend money on a few beautiful maternity dresses like the one in this photo.
