In June, The Travelers, a world-famous insurance company that is headquartered here in Hartford sponsors a PGA golf tournament in Cromwell, Connecticut. Today, I met several of their young interns at the Red Dress Run. Scott, originally from Illinois, who studies at UPenn’s world-famous business school came to Connecticut via The Traveler’s Summer Internship Program. Scott, an avid runner, was able to swap stories with me about grueling races and how we both ran with injuries until our stress fractures became so serious that they showed up on x-rays. A stress fracture occurs when an athlete’s tendons become so inflamed that they actually pull away from and crack his or her bones. I was amazed that Scott and so many other twenty-one year olds from his program had gotten up so early on a Saturday morning to help out in the name of women’s health. Scott and I worked at the two mile mark water stop where we met John and his two sons. John kindly took the photo of Scott and I before the thirsty runners descended upon our station. Thanks again to all of the inspiring and responsible young people like Scott and his friends who wake up early to donate their time to important causes such as women’s health.
