Teens and Toddlers Engage With The Common Core

K-8 schools allow for ample opportunities for teachers of teens to pair their students with younger readers. Unless a high school campus also features a child development program with a pre-school component, pairing high school students with younger students can present some logistical challenges. I want to help my students to improve their speaking and listening skills. Looking at some of the important standards from the Common Core Standards (which have been adopted by public schools in nearly all of the fifty states) such as "speak audibly, and express thoughts, feelings and ideas clearly" which can be traced from K to 12th grade gave me the idea of having my students practice by reading aloud to my daughter. I would like to have my students model appropriate oral reading behaviors for my 2 yr. old daughter using a high level picture book that supports their current course of study. Hopefully my daughter and my students will enjoy this experiment.
