This morning, I was fortunate to participate in the four mile Delaney Dash to benefit the Sean Delaney Memorial Scholarship Fund. A male soloist performed The Star Spangled Banner, and we were off into the mist. Although I have run this very route over the Old Saybrook Causeway hundreds of times, today was the first time that I took part in this race. A kids’ fun run also ran, which meant that many moms and dads were also present at the event. The weather reminded me of a zombie movie, but instead of a grey-green mob, a pack of beautifully chiseled, vibrant athletes parted the low lying, brackish clouds. As we crossed the causeway, the extremely thick fog completely obscured the mansions across the water on Fenwick Point, as well as the elite runners ahead of me. My goal had been to complete the race in a time of less than twenty-eight minutes, which I missed by twenty-two seconds. Satisfied with my 7:06 mile splits, I ran back down the course to cheer on the remaining athletes. By the end of the race, the sun broke through slightly, and I was able to see amazing mother of two teens, Michelle, finishing just a minute or so behind me. My own mom, Judi came by about six minutes later. My daughter and I cheered loudly for “Mimi” as she crossed the water. Our family looks forward to volunteering for and competing in many more races this summer. Congrats to all the parents who demonstrate a love of running to their children! Thanks for helping raise money for important causes and also for raising all of the future runners and volunteers out there.
