I don't know about you, but for me Christmas vacation for the kids means the exact opposite for me. In addition to my full time roles as mother and professor, I add to merry maker, hostess, gift wrapper and party planner to my list of things to do. Coming off of several unproductive (in terms of home and work) days spent at school meeing my room mom obligations, the prospect of two weeks of vacation seems a little daunting.
This year, unlike years past, I have taken days off while my students are on Winter Break. I am hoping that will help eliminate some of the distracted, trying to get work done while kids are climbing the walls chaos that we had to endure last year during this vacation from school.
Don't get me wrong, I love having my kids home and contrary to what it might sound like, I really do like the holiday season. However, as someone who works from home, I end up spread very thin trying to add all of the holiday activities and chores on top of my work and home obligations.
I'm hoping some official days off (is there really such a thing ?) will allow me to enjoy my kids' vacation this year, but let's be honest. A vacation from school is a vacation for the kids, not for working moms.
How will you handle the holiday vacation at your house ?
