Peace and Potato Chips

My mother in law lost one of her best friends last week.  On Friday I met my husband for her funeral mass.  The mass was given in the church where our kids were christened, by the priest who christened them. The priest who traveled to Chicago to marry us. The same priest who came to the hospital and annointed our daughter when she nearly left this earth at four years old. The same priest who I confidently told I would never send my kids to Catholic school  (for eight years now, they've all gone to Catholic school). The same priest who has woven his way into the fabric of our family over the years.  The man has a gift for words like none other I have seen.  My mother in law's friend was quite a woman, a spunky character, strong and opinionated. Rick and I were curious what Father could say to honor her memory in a peaceful and meaningful way.  The theme of this gifted man's homily ?  Lays Potato Chips.  I kid you not. He told the story of this woman's last days on earth, ending with the evening of her visitation, all wrapped around his desire to eat Lay's chips.  After desiring, resisting, but still really wanting the Lay's chips all day, he sat down in the "family room" to visit with the grieving family. What was there for him ?  Lay's chips.  The point of his homily ?  God provides.  He gives you what you need.  Even if it is just a bag of chips.  Really good, salt and vinegar chips. I haven't done it justice here, but think about the message of this spunky lady's funeral mass.  God provides.  You get what you need when you believe, when you do the right thing.  You don't have to be Catholic, or even particularly religious, to hear this. My husband and I smiled all the way out of the church. On the way home, I did something I wouldn't normally do.  I bought a BIG bag of Lay's Potato Chips and took them home for my kids.
