Today I had the pleasure of executing a Christmas party for the third grade at my little guy's school. Me, my co roommom, one hundred and twenty one third graders and an army of mom volunteers spent the afternoon whopping it up. Gingerbread men cookies, Christmas caroling complete with violin player, Advent bingo.....you name it, if it is fun and appropriate for the parochial school classroom, we did it today. The best part of the party was the service project. The kids worked together in groups. They created ornaments and decorations. The glitter glue was flying and there were sequins and gems all over the place. I was so impressed with what these kids created with some glitter and glue ! The decorations were arranged on an artifical evergreen wreath and glued on by some of the soldiers in the army of moms that volunteered for the party. The wreaths are going to be delivered, along with the first edition of a residents' newsletter, to the residents of Heidelberg Street in downtown Detroit. Part of an ongoing effort, the wreaths will help build a sense of community for area residents. Check out the amazing Heidelberg Project http://www.heidelberg.org/ These suburban kids, some who have never been to Detroit, spent time at their Christmas party, working together to create something for someone else. Isn't that what Christmas is all about ?
