I decided today there is one thing I will not say when someone asks me to do something. I will not say I am too busy. Can you volunteer to serve the snack ? That is a yes or no question. No where in that question does it ask for your daily routine, the number of carpools you drive or how much your husband travels for work.
Let's face it, we are all busy. Those of us who work outside the home are really, really busy. When I moved from working as an adjunct to a full time professor, nothing dropped from my schedule. I didn't drop my volunteer commitments, although I did refrain from making new ones. At least any big new ones. I have the same amount of household help I did when I wasn't working at all. My schedule is full, my husband's schedule is full and with school, sports and everything else, my children's schedules are full too. However, I am going to resist the urge to explain just how busy I am to anyone who asks me to do something. I will answer the question they asked me with a simple yes or no.
I know no one wants to hear how busy I am. How do I know ? Because when I carve time out of my busy schedule to organize volunteers for a school function, I don't want to hear how busy you are. I want a simple yes or no answer to whether you can help or not.
I'm going to do as I say and not say how busy I am.
How do you handle being asked to volunteer for something at your children's school ?

No, that isn't alot of
No, that isn't alot of supervision ! You could use some parent volunteers, if you could find some who weren't too busy ). I am always happy to pitch in at my kids' school, even when I shouldn't (because I am too busy). The years go by so quickly, can't believe I have one going to high school. I prefer to volunteer where I can be with the kids. I suspect you might, too.
I am excited to volunteer as
I am excited to volunteer as a track coach at my school again this year, starting next week. I guess this is selfish volunteering because I am running the whole time, and I love to run. There is one paid coach who works with the jumpers and throwers, then I am with the runners. Two adults for 50-60 kids is not a lot of supervision.
