Here He Goes Again

You may recall that my oldest son, at the time thirteen, traveled to Europe last summer, without me, or anyone else in our family.  He was so excited to go and thoroughly enjoyed himself.  He grew up, gained independence and it was a very positive experience for him.   While he was gone I had trouble sleeping, was distracted and generally irritated.  It just doesn't feel right to have one of my kids in another country without me !

Yesterday we took Max to the airport, again.  This year he is going to Greece and Italy, without me or anyone else in our family.  I am hoping he will enjoy himself as much this year as he did last year.  I am sure I will once again have trouble sleeping and concentrating.  Everyone in our household can attest to the fact that I am crabby and irritated already.

I keep reminding myself, it isn't about me.  It is about Max.  He loves to travel, to see the world, to meet new people and experience new cultures.  This is a part of who he is.  I know this and appreciate it, but as his mother, it is hard to remember.  I had hoped that it would be easier for me the second time he left the country.  So far, it hasn't been.

Max and I are blogging about his trip.  He is already sharing his thoughts and pictures of Athens, Greece.  He posted a picture of his first greek meal.  Food is very important for Max ! If you'd like to share his adventure and his blog you can find it at

Cross your fingers that I get some sleep and that Max has a safe and wonderful trip.  Keeping up with Max's European Adventure is one more thing for this mom to do !
