After attending BlogHer conference in San Diego last weekend, I'm reminded how face to face meetings are critical in building relationships, both personal and professional. I was excited to go and meet Twitter friends IRL (in real life) and it was really cool. Now we know each other a bit better and feels like a friendship rather than a virtual twitter friend.
I also met people for the first time who I didn't know at all and had never followed on social media. That was a great way to begin and now keep in touch through social media. The truth is...social media is what you make of it. When I find myself commenting alot on someone's Twitter or FB, if I happen to be at a conference or event in their city, I like to try to meet them. If we have so much in common, it usually makes sense. I did that with two friends on Twitter in NYC last year and it turns out that they knew each other. It's a small world in "small biz."
So, it's nice to connect in real time in real life when it works out. It's all about relationships. With my business, Moisture Jamzz, Inc. I try to take extra time to chat with customers at trade shows or when they call the office, I really enjoy people. And 18 yrs. later, I find that I know these people and they've become friends. A little effort goes a long way...and it can hardly be called "work!"
