I just got a text from my sister saying "E is screaming. Don't know what's wrong. So upset. Help!". She is a new mom to a beautiful 2 month old boy who is suddenly fussy almost all day. As every mom knows, it is torture not knowing why your baby is crying. Is he hungry? Is he wet? In pain? Tired? What do I do? Bounce. Rock. Sway. Sing. Take a deep breath and pray he stops.
When my 4 year old H was an infant he would cry for hours and hours. It was nerve-wracking and heart-breaking. One afternoon I was bouncing him on my hip watching Oprah and a woman was on discussing the Dunstan Method to learn the language of your baby's cries. She argued that there are five reasons babies cry-- discomfort, hunger, tiredness, need to burp and lower gas. I immediately ordered her DVD from Amazon and watched it as soon as it arrived. I was never able to decipher all of H's cries except for the one communicating hunger. "Neh!" was clear and understandable and allowed me to know when my baby was hungry. He actually used the "Neh!" cry every time he wanted a bottle and amazingly my 7 month old B uses the same cry. But this only worked for hunger. I could never figure out the other cries, and still can't. If only there was a voice-recognition device to help me translate what he needs!
Charlene Smith had the same needs as a mom to twin daughters and is the inventor of the amazing Intone. The Intone helps differentiate types of cries, like a hungry cry or a gassy cry, and then translates their meaning into a easy to understand lighted display. Genius!
Parents can also use the voice-activated system to log sleeping patterns, feedings and diaper changes.
Charlene submitted her idea to Huggies as part of the 2011 Huggies MomInspired Grant Program and won! She is currently working on having the Intone manufactured and distributed for sale. I'm sure there are many frazzled mommies out there like me who can't wait for this product!
Huggies is now accepting applications for the 2012 Huggies MomInspired grant program. You can learn more and submit original, innovative and viable new business and product ideas at HuggiesMomInspired.com through July 31, 2012. The grant program will award up to twelve
