Social Media Detox (Gulp)

Posted on November 04, 2012

“Do one thing every day that scares you.”
― Eleanor Roosevelt

For the next 7 days I'm going to be doing something that terrifies me. I'm going social media free. Friends, my name is Meghan and I'm addicted to Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Is it the validation of having statuses and pictures liked? Is it feeling connected to friends and family, near and far? Is it a way to kill time when I'm bored? It's probably a little of all of the above. Regardless of the reason, the result is that I'm attached to my phone. Waiting in line for coffee, waiting at a stoplight, during my lunch break, and any other free moments in my day are spent checking notifications and mindlessly exploring social media sites. Sometimes it's fun, but sometimes it makes me really angry (anyone else ready for the election related posts to stop?). This virtual world is taking way too much time from an already full actual world and I know it. It's time to make a change, and as an "all or nothing" kind of girl, I know that my best bet is to go cold turkey. Here are the rules:

-My Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook accounts will remain active, but I am turning off all notifications and will not allow myself to check any of them from noon today until noon next Sunday.

-I'm afraid that abandoning this addiction will encourage me to feed yet another: texting. For that reason, I won't be reading or responding to any texts from 7 am until 7 pm during the work week. If you have an urgent matter that can't wait until 7 pm, you can call me.

In one week I will report back with the good, the bad, and the ugly and let you know how this experiment goes. Is anyone else brave enough to join me?

Have a good week!

xoxo,

Meg

But while women have come a long way in removing workplace barriers, one of the last remaining obstacles is how they treat one another.minus 3 pounds narrow waist 7cm Instead of helping to build one another’s careers, they sometimes derail them — for example, by limiting access to important meetings and committees;fat rejection 4 pounds a week withholding information, assignments and promotions; or blocking the way to mentors and higher-ups.
