I recently purchased a variety of children’s music on iTunes and discovered that even though I am a degreed professional - I am an underperforming student when it comes to nursery rhymes.
I have spent countless moments Googling the lyrics to songs when my three year old comes home from school and have started making up our own versions as we go along. I have now come to the conclusion that being a mom with flexibilities around how and where I work does not necessarily make me a better mother.
I did a random survey with a few close friends and we all admitted (guiltily) to not spending nearly enough time doing “creative and fun” things with our children. My son – who happens to be South Africa’s biggest Angry Birds / Star Wars fan has recently decided that he loves singing – glorious! And colouring seems to be an emerging activity in our household. As he becomes more competent and comfortable with these creative outlets and less addicted to television and games on our phones/tablets – I am starting to discover a fascinating, creative little human being with a beautiful imagination.
I have thus decided to make some more time to spend with him – even if we change the lyrics to Row Row Row Your Boat and colour the sky green (I mean – why not!?) than worry needlessly about things beyond my control. It is as easy as switching your cellphone to silent at a certain time of day and closing the door to the office. Why not treat time with your little one the same as an important appointment with a client – and with a little preparation and arriving early you are assured to have a great time bonding.
