What does it take to make your dream come true?
Last week I was in Holland, and my love for my country came back as soon as I swung myself in the saddle of my bike and rode along the little winding streets in the old part of Amsterdam. It brought back a lot of nostalgic memories.
I remembered how I got my first bike with training wheels on my birthday, and how I, and many of my toddler friends, dreamed of riding a “real” bike without the training wheels.
How did this dream come true for all of us?
If you have kids, you might remember the hours of running behind your kids’ bikes without training wheels, helping them keep their balance; then the slow release of your grip while holding your breath; and then letting them go.
Bravely, and many bruises and bumps later, we, as kids, mastered this task with great vigor. The end result was that we rode our bikes proudly without training wheels.
For all of us, this dream came true.
But what does it take to make your dream come true?
What did we have in common as kids?
All of us thought that anything was possible. We didn’t walk around with beliefs that we weren’t good enough to make this dream come true. We all believed in ourselves and trusted that we could reach our goal within a short amount of time. We thought we were ready, probably before we were. Nobody had parents, teachers, or caregivers who said, “Let’s give up because riding a bike is not for you. In this life, you will stay a walker.” All of us failed miserably the first few times. We all had many bruises and bumps, but it didn’t matter. Courage, taking action, practice, and endurance were what it took. We all reached our dream.
What do we have in common as adults?
We all have a dream but lack the courage to take action. We make vision boards, visualize and pray, but deep down we don’t believe in ourselves. We need more time because think we’re not ready. We don’t have patience with ourselves. We are very bad cheerleaders and beat ourselves up. We are amazing, and we know we can’t wait any longer. We are talented and gifted, but we hide our greatness. The list is long, and you can fill in the blanks.
Maybe this is NOT you. When it comes to living your dreams, there are two kinds of people: those who talk about it, and those who do it.
The ones who talk about it never seem to get off the starting line and climb on their bike. They dream and plan until they have every detail covered. They wait for perfection. To which category do you belong?
We all know that planning is safe because you don’t have to take action. Unfortunately, dreams don’t manifest that way.
My question is this: Are you still talking about your dream, or are you taking steps every day to move closer to your dream?
In case you stumble, don’t worry! That’s part of the journey. Let’s get moving! What is your symbolic bike without the training wheels?
Grab your journal and answer the following questions: What baby steps bring you closer to your dream? What actions can you take starting today? Write them down now. Do you have reasons for not taking action now?
Most importantly, in this day and age you are your own parent running behind the person on the bike without the training wheels.
Be the cheerleader and get up when you stumble. Your dream is worth it, and the world is waiting for you!
