A Blooming Idea

Most moms dream of dressing their baby girls in frilly dresses and big bows. Hallie House was no different. “When my second child, Lyla, was born, I couldn’t resist dressing her in the sweetest clothes and girliest accessories I could find,” says House. “But I had the hardest time finding shoes that would actually stay on her little feet.” Worse yet, the family pediatrician informed House that some shoes (while totally adorable) could restrict the natural development of her baby’s feet.

Determined to adorn her baby’s tootsies in a stylish—and safe—way, House created ToeBlooms, a collection of fashion forward foot adornments. The former PR account executive admits that sewing wasn’t her strongest suit, but that lack of skill didn’t stop her from executing her vision. The Phoenix, AZ native enlisted her grandmother to make the initial prototype of what has now become a successful company. ToeBlooms is now sold in over 500 stores worldwide since its launch in August 2010.

House plans to continue expanding the ToeBlooms line for girls, including gift sets and matching hair clips. And now, baby boys can be stylishly cool, too, with the recent launch of ToeBuds. “We’re also considering expanding into a line for toddlers, too,” says House. With her budding business and three kids to care for Jude [3], Lyla [2], and Piper [11 months], House admits that finding work life balance has been her toughest challenge by far. She keeps things in perspective by being mom first, then a business woman second. “I work whenever I can, but I still don’t get nearly as much sleep as I’d like!” says House. “But my children always get my full attention because they deserve it.”

This was great to read. I'm also launching a new business, a service for moms (and dads) but the big part of quitting my job was to be home with my kids! So on a day like today, when my 22 month old has a stomach virus, it's all about cleaning up bodily fluids, not meeting with my web designer or accountant as I had originally planned. But I don't live to work, I work to live. And there is nothing like a toddler snuggled in your arms, needing your comfort. And yes, I could use more sleep, too....
