Mom-ME time

As a new blogger for Working Mother I feel fortunate, because writing and communicating through my workshops, seminars and live appearances is what I love to do.  The other thing I love to do is parent, but sadly I question if I am always as good at parenting as I am at working.

This doesn’t mean I don’t love my kids, with all my heart and soul I do, but it does mean I think I have some homework in the department of doing things that I don’t always love doing.  And who doesn’t?  So as I greet many of you for the first time in this blog you can count on me to ask questions, provide some answers, and start a conversation that may very well lead to more questions.

So here goes… what kind of mother are we? Are we the kind that would rather sit at Pret a Manger in NYC and power write a new blog while drinking an latte laden with organic skim milk brimming a silky smooth foam top?  Check.

Or are we the kind that would rather step into our pants while curling the hair, blow drying the kids hair while feeding the bird, making breakfast and getting the kids to school?  Ummmm… check.

The point is we moms are multi-taskers and we should be proud and shout it loud.  We can’t always be the best at everything we do, but that doesn’t mean we’re not in it to win it every day.  I’m sure you’ve read recent studies which show women work an average 20 hours longer than men and 9 of those hours are pure, passionate, sometimes pain –in –the you know what multi-tasking.  I may not always be as patient or as present as the kids would like, but I do know when I give myself permission to do what I want, the harder tasks feel easier and I take a step closer to actually keeping all the balls in the air for a minute longer.

So why not remember that no matter how much multi-tasking we do, make sure every day we spend time doing something we love.  Writing, knitting, baking, walking, watching a favorite show.  It doesn’t matter.  My blog writing at Pret a Manger is what I fondly call mom-ME time.  What about you?  How are you dedicating at least an hour today to your mom—me needs?

Being present for your family starts with showing up for you.  It’s simple.  You’ve read it before.  But maybe now you’re reading it here, again, because it’s a message you need to hear.  Call it a friendly reminder.

So make time for what’s important to you and your family, do all the amazing things we moms have to do, but do it from a perspective of balance, by giving to yourself.  When you do, You’ll be amazed at the difference in the way you feel.

In advance, I thank you for welcoming me to the Working Mother blog.  It feels like home already.
