What Really Matters

Working Mother's consulting food editor, Jennifer Perillo, lost her husband, Mikey, suddenly this past Sunday to a heart attack. Jen has two daughters, ages 8 and 3. Mikey adored them all, and they adored him. Jen now has to figure out how to live and raise her girls without him. She had no warning.

I've known Jen for some five years, and though I wouldn't say we're close, I have always been fond of her. This news has shaken me terribly. I have lived through the death of family members and loved ones before, but for some reason I am feeling this deeply—though it is nothing compared to what Jen is going through.

One thing that has happened, though, is that the online food community, of which Jen has been an active part for some years now, has rallied around her. The tweets sending love and support her way have been many and remarkable. Food bloggers are setting up weekly food deliveries to her home, and there are plans for a scholarship fund for the girls. One blogger friend stepped in to complete an assignment for Working Mother that Jen had pending. And Jen herself posted a recipe on her blog of a peanut butter pie that Mikey had loved—and today cooks and moms all over the country are making this pie as a collective show of love and support for Jennifer and her daughters.

When tragedy happens, people can be very, very good. They show that they love, they feel, they care, they help. But, of course, Jennifer has always given of herself, so it's not surprising that so many want to give back to her. Jen, your Working Mother family sends its love. We're here for you and your girls. And I'll be baking peanut butter pie this weekend.
