Lesson Learned - Accepting Help

Posted on January 29, 2012

As a working mom, it's very difficult for me to accept help sometimes. Ok, most times. At work, I love managing all the details to bring a project together. At home, I love providing a stable, happy home for my son and husband. I love being the one they all count on! But, I'm learning more and more each day that accepting help from people I trust is essential in keeping our lives on track. My husband and I have opposite schedules a lot of times, so I've had to really lean on him to help me keep our home in order. I've been pleasantly surprised! He has stepped up to the plate in huge ways and kept our home together when I just don't have the time. Another amazing resource has been my son's teachers. He has been so incredibly blessed with amazing women taking care of him every day at daycare. They see him almost more than I do, so I have to rely on them to pick up on things that I probably won't see. They take a lot of the discipline on to themselves and I hold their opinion in very high regard. I trust their judgement with my son, and, again, I've been pleasantly surprised. I've also learned to rely on coworkers and friends in my times of craziness. Without leaning on these amazing people, there's no way that I'd be able to do it all. I've been very blessed in my life with people that I can lean on. Look around...you probably have been, too! It may take a little bit of looking, but they are there. Let them help you...you'll be amazed at the difference it will make! :)

To the mommy who is considering a new job: If there is a YMCA or Boys and Girls Club near your kids' schools, they can do some wonderful programs. Most daycares also provide transportation for school-age children before and after school. Ask the working parents in your town for a recommendation on the best program. You will miss them more than they miss you. My daughter loves playing at night in our gym daycare even after she has been at her regular school during the day. I've have the older kids check on her for me while I'm working out and she is always playing with the other tots.

I have a delima you may can help me out with. I am currently a school nurse and have a great schedule with my kids. But I find the job challenging at times but also very monotonous and boring at times and I miss working with a team of nurses and working with other adults who understand what I do. I recently got offered a job with my local VA medical center and the job pays basically 20,000 more a year and is still a M-F job working 8-4:30 with all federal holidays off, 5 weeks vacation and 13 sick days. But yet I still feel very torn in taking the job. I keep having mommy guilt that I won't be able to always take and pick up the kids like I do know and won't always have the same days that they are off from school now. I don't really have family close by to help out on a daily basis so I am scared of who will be able to help me out if needed. What should I do????

What a blessing to be a working mommy, and to be able to afford high quality childcare! Wait until your son starts talking a little bit in the next few months. He will tell you all about his friends in his toddler class and about the special vistors and fieldtrips.

Hi I am an attorney with a busy private practice and I have an 8 year old son. When I went back to work we had an amazing daycare provider. I began to refer to her as the day mommy and I was the day mommy. And my coworker have always been available to cover things for me when I needed to stay home with him. It really does take a village to help us raise our children these days. Good luck Nicki nicke@practicallyperfectprincess.com
