I'm on a mini-vacation with my son. Well, truly, we came to Florida so my son could have an operation, but he is doing so well that we are able to have a bit of fun. Anyhoo, I digress. As we were in a store yesterday, this kind lady offered to watch my son (he got tired and needed to sit outside the store) so I could pay for my purchases. When I came back, she looked at me and said "I don't know how you Single Moms do it, but I applaud you." Now, it needs to be mentioned that I did not have a conversation with this lady about my status (single or married) nor did we even exchange names. However, she was pleasant enough and the response that came out first was "Well, it's just like breathing...you just do it."
And, that is all there is to it. Not many moms aspire to be single moms. Whether you were married and now divorced, widowed, or never married to begin with - however you got there doesn't matter. What matters is that you are HERE and really, life goes on. I don't think about what it is LIKE to be the only parent in the household (maybe I did when I first separated from my ex). My son needs to go to school, he needs to eat, he needs clothes, and I am the only one that is going to provide him with all of those needs. Sure, I have TONS of help. But, at the end of the day, it's me and him. And maybe because I have been at it for 5 years now, but it really is natural. You work it out with your kid(s).
So, kind little lady looked at me and said "Huh, I never thought of it like that...you have a fine young man and congrats to you both." To which I replied..."I know, and Thank You."
